Villa end the season with a draw against would-be Champions Brighton as their first season in the Championship proves a qualified success as the team is rejuvenated, the rotten wood shipped out, quick action in the boardroom prevents a second successive relegation and but for a terrible six weeks at the start of 2017 and the last five games of the season with nothing to play for Steve Bruce delivers promotion winning form with fourteen victories in twenty one Championship matches.

ON THIS DAY

Villa’s first campaign in the second tier in twenty nine years came to its conclusion and it was always likely to be a difficult one given the utter disarray the club was in following 2015-16.

An underwhelming managerial appointment followed by a rescue job by a Championship specialist added more instability. Yet Villa built a large squad with players that should have been capable of an immediate return to the top flight. That alone was an achievement.

The run of draws under Robert Di Matteo followed by a torrid run under Steve Bruce in the early months of 2017 effectively put paid to any potential promotion prospects.

Buttressed between those low points however was some genuinely excellent consistency and a feeling that Villa could make an immediate Premier League return. But a mystifying tendency to change the team from game to game seemed to rob Villa of a personality, a way of playing or even a consistent objective.

However, that Villa, by 2017, had seen the back of the vast majority of the 2015-16 squad, was in itself a significant achievement but the team that remained could and should have achieved more.

Left back Jordan Amavi made his final appearance for Villa aged 23 before moving on to Olympique Marseille for £9,000,000 in July 2018 after a season long loan.

Amavi was one of the few highlights from the 2015 recruitment intake, sadly injuries robbed Villa of his services for most to the relegation season but despite him being head and shoulders in quality above the other arrivals who agitated, failed and moved on, Jordan stayed fully committed to the cause.

Over his 2 seasons with Villa, Amavi made 48 appearances, including 9 as a substitute.

Centre back Nathan Baker made his final appearance for Villa aged 26 before moving on to Bristol City for £3,900,000 in July 2017.

Baker had come through the youth team ranks at Villa and after 9 seasons had made 122 appearances and one goal.

MATCHDAY QUOTES

“We’re 31 points behind Brighton and that’s unacceptable. I’ve got to have a squad of players who can mount a challenge otherwise I won’t be sitting here [next season].

“We’ve finished 13th and that’s the lowest I’ve finished in my career.

“The draw put a bit of a dampener on it [for Brighton] but they have got promoted. For us to be 31 points behind them shows the work I’ve got and we’re as jealous as hell.”

Steve Bruce, Sunday, 7 May 2017.

Sunday, 7 May 2017

*Jack Grealish’s last-minute equaliser for Aston Villa denied Brighton & Hove Albion the Championship title.*

The Premier League-bound Seagulls were beaten by Bristol City and Norwich in their past two games with only three points required to seal top spot.

Glenn Murray’s penalty after Sam Baldock was fouled by Nathan Baker, who was sent off for the challenge, looked to be sending them towards the title.

However, Grealish’s strike handed top spot to Newcastle, who beat Barnsley.

Chris Hughton’s side, who confirmed their return to the top flight on 17 April, also miss out on a fourth league title in 16 years - with no other current EFL team having won more league titles since 2000 than the Seagulls.

Villa, good value for their point against Brighton, finish 13th in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League last season.

Henri Lansbury wasted their clearest opportunity prior to Murray’s opener, heading over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.

Visiting goalkeeper David Stockdale was also forced into several smart saves - the best to deny Conor Hourihane from long range - but he looked to be at fault for Grealish’s late equaliser.

Having played the last half an hour with 10 men following Baker’s straight red card, the 31-year-old keeper was wrong-footed by the Villa midfielder’s strike despite appearing to initially have it covered.

Brighton will now have to pick themselves up after their stuttering end to the season as they prepare for their first top-flight campaign for 34 years.
