On This Day
Villa end 2016 in transformed form under Steve Bruce as they make it seven wins and three draws in thirteen Championship matches under the new boss.
Steve Bruce's Villa end the year unbeaten in three as a late Jonathan Kodjia penalty secures a point against 4th placed Leeds, as a result Villa climb to 9th as Bruce's first thirteen games continue to show a significant improvement over Di Matteo's twelve match reign.
Jordan Amavi makes his 25th start in a Villa shirt (31 Appearances) to make it W9 D9 L13, 4 Assists and 5 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
James Chester collects his 5th booking on his 23rd appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W9 D11 L4 and 6 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Jordan Ayew, one of the poster boys of Villa's descent into the second tier, makes his final appearance in a Villa shirt, aged 25. Ayew left for Swansea in a swap deal that brought left back Neil Taylor to the club as well as £5,310,000. Villa had signed Ayew from FC Lorient in July 2015 for a fee of £10,800,000 and went on to make 58 appearances (48 Starts) to leave with a record of W11 D18 L29, 10 Goals, 4 Assists, 13 Bookings and 1 Red Card.
Rudy Gestede, one of the poster boys of Villa's appalling recruitment in the last half decade, makes his final appearance in a Villa shirt, aged 28. Gestede moved on to Middlesbrough for £6,390,000 having made 55 appearances, 29 as a substitute, in his two seasons with Villa to leave with a record of W9 D16 L30, 10 Goals, 4 Assists and 5 Bookings.
What they Said
“It’s the best Leeds team I’ve seen in a good few years.
“They’re confident, playing well and you can see that in abundance. But we stuck at it and got a point out of the game.
“We might have nicked it and I think that might have been a bit unfair.
“We’re still unbeaten at home but we’ve got a lot of work to do, I’m under no illusions about that. We’re still a long way away from where we need to be.”
Steve Bruce, Thursday, 29 December 2016.
Jonathan Kodjia’s late penalty nicked a point for Aston Villa as they drew 1-1 with Leeds in the Sky Bet Championship on Thursday night.
Liam Cooper’s rash handball allowed Kodjia to slot home from the spot in the 86th minute at Villa Park, cancelling out Pontus Jansson’s headed opener for Leeds earlier in the second half.
Garry Monk’s side would have risen to third in the table if they had managed to hold on for victory, but instead end the day a place lower in fourth. Villa, meanwhile, climb to ninth, five points off the play-off places.
Villa were nearly gifted the opener after less than two minutes as Kalvin Phillips played a dangerous back pass right into the path of Kodjia in the Leeds area. Luckily for Phillips, though, his team-mate Jansson got across to deny the striker before he could get a shot away.
In terms of chances, though, that was pretty much as good as it got in the first half, with both sides defending resiliently and keeping opportunities for the opposition to a minimum.
The second half, however, was a far more entertaining affair almost from the off, and after 54 minutes Leeds had the lead. It was defender Jansson who got the goal, as Villa goalkeeper Mark Bunn failed to stop his header from a Stuart Dallas corner squirming over the line.
Falling behind rattled Villa, and it could have been even worse just a couple of minutes later as Jansson, once again at a corner, was afforded far too much space to take a touch just inside the area and rattle the crossbar with a fierce volley.
Leeds looked like they were going to hold on until Cooper’s daft handball in the final few minutes, the defender jumping with his arm aloft as he challenged Villa sub Rudy Gestede in the air, leaving referee Roger East with no option but to award the penalty before Kodjia did the damage from the spot.
That was not to be the end of the action as both sides had great chances to win it in the closing stages. First Hadi Sacko nearly capitalised on a Jordan Amavi mistake, getting in behind before rattling the Villa crossbar.
The home side then went up the other end and saw Kodjia force a fine save out of Rob Green from close range, the last real opportunity of the game as the spoils were shared.
