Villa win their fourth Premier League game in ten and climb to 14th place in the table, but are only two points clear of the drop zone as jeopardy continues. Much of Villa's revival under Sherwood had come under Christian Benteke who had now scored eleven in his last nine however the entire side looked significantly improved albeit hamstrung by the dreadful run of games under Lambert.
Villa enter a crucial May and open with victory over Everton to make it four Premier League wins in eight as they climb to 14th in the table under Tim Sherwood. Villa however remain just two points clear of the relegation places with three absolutely critical games left to play.
Having not scored in his first 31 games, Tom Cleverley scores for the second successive game in a Villa shirt on his 33rd appearance in a to make it W12 D6 L15, 2 Goals, 0 Assists and 6 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Shay Given makes his first League appearance in a Villa shirt since August 2012, 126 games previously having been ostracised by former manager Paul Lambert for no apparent reason. Given's return to the league football left him with 50 Appearances since signing under Alex McLeish 4 years previously and W16 D16 L18, 72 Goals Conceded, 10 Clean Sheets and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Leandro Bacuna contributes his 5th assist in a Villa shirt on his 60th appearance (43 Starts) having not contributed a single assist in his first 48 games for the club. Bacuna's record now stands at W22 D12 L26, 5 Goals, 5 Assists and 9 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Ron Vlaar contributes his 5th goal involvement and collects his 5th booking in a Villa shirt on his 84th appearance (83 Starts) to make it W28 D21 L35, 2 Goals, 3 Assists, 10 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.

What they Said
“It was a huge win today but you know what, I’ve drove [sic] myself mad ever since I’ve been here looking at the fixtures of other teams and the league table. I’ve got no interest now.
“If we don’t do our job we deserve to go down. Everyone is going to win, it’s a freak season, isn’t it?
“Leicester can go and win four in 29 or whatever it was and then they win five in six. It’s enough pressure trying to look after your own team, never mind worrying about everyone else’s results. If we win the games that are available to us … and I think we might need to win them all to stay in the league.
“I thought Fabian Delph showed why he’s probably, in my opinion, the best midfield player in the country at the moment. I wouldn’t swap him for anyone in the mess we’re in.
“It’s not only about energy and desire, it’s about flair and imagination. He’s got the whole package. I see Roy Hodgson was up there, I think he would have been very impressed with the two midfield players, Cleverley as well.”
Tim Sherwood, Saturday, 2 May 2015.
Christian Benteke’s first-half double helped Aston Villa boost their chances of Premier League survival with a 3-2 home win over Everton.
Benteke’s 10th-minute header gave Villa the lead on Saturday, before the Belgian scored his 12th goal in 11 games with a far-post finish before the break.
Everton halved the deficit in the second half through Romelu Lukaku’s penalty, but Villa regained their two-goal lead five minutes later through Tom Cleverley’s neat finish.
Phil Jagielka’s header in stoppage time made it 3-2, but Villa held on and the result keeps them two points clear of the drop zone with three games remaining.
After Leicester’s 3-0 win over Newcastle earlier in the day, Villa were under pressure to earn a positive result, and they duly started the brighter.
Tim Sherwood’s side were ahead after just 10 minutes, Benteke rising high above Leighton Baines to connect with Fabian Delph’s deep cross from six yards.
They were nearly 2-0 up from another set piece, but unmarked Ron Vlaar’s header from close range went just wide of Tim Howard’s goal.
But Villa did double their lead just before half-time, as Jack Grealish’s dangerous corner evaded Vlaar but was met by Benteke at the far post to slide home from a couple of yards.
Everton improved after half-time, and earned a penalty after some poor defending from Villa resulted in Vlaar bringing down Steven Naismith.
Lukaku rolled the ball just beyond Shay Given for 2-1, but moments later Villa scored against the run of play.
After being put through on goal by a fine through ball from Leandro Bacuna, Cleverley struck the ball high past Howard for his second goal in two games (64).
Villa had most of the play for the remaining 25 minutes, but Everton made for a nervy last two as Jagielka nodded the ball over the line after a melee- despite Shay Given’s appeals for a foul in the six-yard box.
Sherwood’s Villa held on for his fourth Premier League win as manager, but results elsewhere mean the hosts are still in a battle for survival.
Charlie Nicholas:
“This is the best I’ve seen Aston Villa in a long time. For me they have an all-round balance. They have energy, desire, positive passing and running, it was all there today. Villa were more than worthy of the three points and they looked a really good side today.
“Delph was absolutely magical today, Westwood sat in front of the back allowed Delph and Cleverley to go show their energy. Benteke was a constant problem for Everton. This is by far and away the best Aston Villa performance this season.”
