On This Day
Despite taking the lead Villa lose a third successive game to end the season winless in three and in second place in the inaugural Premier League table.
Villa had proved a superb, exciting footballing side that dominated the goal of the month and goal of the season segments. Sadly Villa couldn’t quite keep up the momentum to take the title ahead of eventual winners Manchester United. The run of 3 defeats to the end of the season flattered the Champions by giving the title race the look of a foregone conclusion as they finished 10 points clear. The reality however was very different. It remains a moot point as to how the final table would have looked if the ‘generous’ refereeing at Old Trafford on 10th April 1993 hadn’t gifted Manchester United a win. Given the immediate results Villa produced thereafter it is not beyond credibility that Villa’s form would have continued through the final 3 games to win the title most observers felt Villa’s play deserved. As it was however, Manchester United won their first title in decades.
Centre Forward Martin Carruthers makes his first, and what would prove to be his last, appearance in 14 months before joining Stoke City in July for a fee of £100,000. Carruthers left with a record of 6 Appearances, 2 Starts, W2 D0 L4, 0 Goals and 0 Assists across his two seasons around the first team.

What they Said
"Rangers hit the winner in the 75th minute when Bradley Allen's shot took a deflection on its way into the back of the net."
ONE final chapter was added to Aston Villa's end of season nightmare at Loftus Road.
The facts behind Villa’s dismal run-in show why they had to settle for for runners-up, ten points behind champions Manchester United.
In their last 10 fixtures, Ron Atkinson's team have lost four, drawn three and won only three matches. Tony Daley put Villa ahead in the 36th minute with his eighth goal of the season.
The move started with a brilliant tackle by Paul McGrath on Les Ferdinand. Garry Parker brought the ball away and released Daley, who danced passed two tackles before firing a shot past goalkeeper Tony Roberts.
Rangers, bidding to clinch fifth place in the table and end up as London's top club, came back strongly in the second half and deservedly pulled level with 23 minutes to go.
Alan McDonald threaded ball a fine ball for Ferdinand, who let fly with a right foot shot that Villa goalkeeper Mark Bosnich managed to stretch a hand to but was unable to stop.
Rangers hit the winner in the 75th minute when Bradley Allen's shot took a deflection on its way into the back of the net.
