Villa need an 83' equaliser to draw with Oldham as they fall back to 6th in the table under Ron Atkinson.
Villa are now unbeaten in 9, winning 6 under Ron Atkinson.
Midfielder Dave Farrell, 20, makes his debut in a Villa shirt after joining from Redditch United in January 1992 for a fee of £45,000 to become the 692nd player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
Dalian Atkinson makes it eight goals in 15 games this season and nine in 32 appearances in a Villa shirt (29 Starts) to make it W13 D12 L7, 9 Goals and 8 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 1.88 games he has played so far in his Villa career and one for every 1.50 games he has played in 1992-93.
Dwight Yorke makes his 50th start in a Villa shirt (70 Appearances) to make it W28 D19 L23, 20 Goals, 10 Assists and 1 Booking at a goal involvement rate of one for every 2.33 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
Dean Saunders contributes his first assist in a Villa shirt on his 8th appearance to make it W5 D3 L0, 6 Goals and 1 Assist so far in his Villa career.
Former Villa forward Ian Olney scores Oldham’s goal.
What they Said
“The boss kept saying we could score at any point in the match and he was proved right.
“We fully deserved at least a point but we could easily have given up after all the chances we had created in the first half.”
Dalian Atkinson.
DALIAN Atkinson’s goal nine minutes from time earned title contenders Aston Villa a point from a stirring encounter at Boundary Park.
A long hopeful cross from Dean Saunders far out on the right for once caught the previously solid Oldham defence flat-footed and it allowed Atkinson to run in unmarked to head home and stretch Villa's unbeaten run to nine games.
Oldham had scored after 19 minutes when Steve Redmond's corner was powered goalwards by Richard Jobson and lan Olney, virtually on the line, used his head to score against his old side.
That prompted Villa to step up a gear, but John Hallworth was equal to the task with saves from Paul McGrath, Dean Saunders, Dalian Atkinson and Dwight Yorke.
