Villa triumph over the "thuggery" of "brutal" Barcelona 🇪🇸 who "kicked everything that moved" to win the UEFA Super Cup.
Tony Barton's 🏴 Villa, reigning European Champions, win the Super Cup by hammering Barcelona 🇪🇸 on a bewildering European night at Villa Park.
Midfielder Paul Birch 🏴 makes his debut in a Villa shirt to become the 622nd player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
Forward Gary Shaw 🏴 scores his ⚽ 60th goal for the club and records his 80th goal involvement as he makes his 🕒 150th start in a Villa shirt (152 Appearances).
Centre forward Peter Withe 🏴 makes his 🕒 125th appearance in a Villa shirt.
What they Said
“I was very disappointed with Barcelona, they have quality players and don’t need to play like they did.
“It was only my players’ restraint which prevented it getting even worse.
“I don’t feel we intimidated them at all and there is no reason why we should fear sanctions from UEFA.
“People are continually knocking British football but I’m sure no one wants to see us play the way Barcelona did tonight.
“When we looked at it before the game it seemed worth competing in because it is another European tournament, another medal.
“Now my feelings are bitter sweet.
“We will be without Allan Evans in Europe next time and we could have lost a few more players [through injury] for Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Wolves.
“I only saw bits and pieces of the Spurs game last year [Cup Winners Cup semi final with Barcelona for which they were heavily fined] but I can’t believe it could have been worse than this.
“People keep going on about what’s wrong with British football and saying that we are inferior to the continentals.
“But if that’s the way they want to see us play every Saturday, then I don’t want any part of it.
“I thought there might be some trouble because Barcelona have a reputation for violence away from home and they were coming here to defend a one goal lead.
“But I never expected anything like this.
“I don’t know why they do it.”
Tony Barton.
