Upton Park

Villa encounter a curious refereeing performance at Upton Park much to the ire of Ron Saunders as Ken McNaught scores his third in two games and Andy Gray nets again but it could have been so more from an entertaining match.

MATCHDAY QUOTES

“We are not supposed to critics referees but when Tommy Taylor pulled down John Deehan in the second half, it was a blatant penalty.

“It was impossible for Deehan to have been offside when Gray headed the ball [in the 27’ minute.

“Gray was barely four of five yards from the goalline himself and Deehan was behind him all the time.

"He was running through but was behind Gray when it mattered and only continued to move forward to make sure the ball crossed the line.

"The penalty decision was just ludicrous. The referee put his whistle to his mouth, changed his mind at the last second and then told my players it was nowhere near to being a penalty.

“How can you expect a player to keep cool when this happens?

“We dropped a point because of it and that the sort of thing that can cost me my job at the end of the season.”

Ron Saunders.
