On This Day
Villa have to play nearly two thirds of the return leg at Camp Nou with ten men after right back John Gidman ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ is sent off again but Villa fight back against the odds as they take the lead at the Camp Nou but Barcelona squeeze through to the UEFA Cup semi finals 3-4 on aggregate.
Right back John Gidman ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ is ๐ฅ sent off on his ๐ 184th appearance in a Villa shirt. It is Gidman's ๐ฅ 3rd red card following his ๐ฅ dismissal against Middlesbrough in December and his ๐ฅ sending off against Oldham in October 1974.
Forward Brian Little ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ scores his โฝ 70th goal in a Villa shirt on his ๐ 225th appearance (218 Starts) to make it ๐ฉ W103 ๐จ D59 ๐ฅ L63, โฝ 70 Goals and ๐ฅ 47 Assists at a rate of one goal every 3.21 games.
What they Said
"I do not agree with the sending off of John Gidman.
โThe Barcelona player elbowed him and Gidman retaliated but did not make contact.
"Gidman has a lot of ability and we intended to use it in the space we knew would he free behind the left back.
โBut the first time he went on a run he clashed with de la Cruz and paid the penalty.
"But I am proud of how my ten players conducted themselves on the night.
โThey were all magnificent and we can look to the future with confidence. We deserve to get a draw at least."
Ron Saunders.
