Red & Yellow Cards were first adopted in the 1970 World Cup before entering English football for a period in the 1970s and 1980s. Their use was suspended before being reintroduced in the late 1980s and remain in force today. The practice of 'cautions' and 'ordering a player from the field' however has been in place since the beginning of football and the statistics here represent that practice as opposed to cases solely where a card was shown.
