Harry Simmonds
Player #2 for Aston Villa, Henry Richmond Simmonds, known as Harry Simmons played as a defender for the club. Harry made his debut in the 1879-80 FA Cup campaign - Villa’s first entry into the competition.
Harry was born in Birmingham, just 3 miles from the current Villa ground, in June 1858 and made his debut as a 21 year old on the 13th December 1879.
Villa had signed Harry from Wesleyan Methodists and he went on to represent the club for three successive seasons from 1879-80 to 1881-82.
Harry’s final game came on 21st January 1882 having made 10 FA Cup appearances and reaching the 4th Round on two occasions. He subsequently retired from football aged 23 due to an ankle injury.
Harry played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role.
Harry passed away in Handsworth on 3rd August 1939 aged 81.
