Ted Lee

Player #5 for Aston Villa, Edward Botterill Lee, known as Ted Lee played as a half back for the club. Ted made his debut in the 1879-80 FA Cup campaign - Villa’s first entry into the competition

Ted was born in Harborne, six miles from the current Villa ground, in 1857.Villa had signed Ted from Lordswood Council & Aston Manor Schools and he went on to represent the club in successive season from 1879-80 to 1882-83.

Ted had actually played in Villa’s first ever game in February 1875 vs. Aston Park but his debut in the FA Cup came on 13th December 1879 aged 22 and was one of only four players from Villa’s debut season in the FA Cup to still feature in the 1882-83 season.

Ted’s final game came on 3rd March 1883 having achieved a best finish of reaching the 5th Round that season. Ted would retire from football soon after at the age of just 25 due to ill health and he moved to South Africa.

Ted had played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role.

Ted returned to England and passed away in Harbourne in August 1930 aged 73.
