*Sporting Life*
Wednesday, 8 December 1880
ASTON VILLA BIRMINGHAM, v. NOTTINGHAM FOREST.
This match was played on the Old Trent Bridge Ground at Nottingham last Saturday afternoon, before nearly three thousand spectators.
Considerable interest was felt in the result, especially as Birmingham this season had already twice beaten their opponents.
Widdowson. the Forest captain, set the ball motion, and after temporary assault had been made by Earp on the visitors’ goal, Davis ran it down to the opposite end and Hunter immediately scored.
Play was continued, and for a time the Birmingham stronghold was in danger, repeated unsuccessful shots being directed towards it by Earp, Widdowson and Parr.
At half-time no further score had been registered, but soon after the interval Earp crossed prettily to Widdowson, and the latter succeeded i» equalising matters, although the success was of brief duration, Vaughton, coming with rush, added a second goal for Aston Villa, who eventually won by two goals to one.
