Andy Hunter

Player #11 for Aston Villa, Andrew Hunter, known as Andy Hunter played as a forward for the club. Andy made his debut in the 1879-80 FA Cup campaign - Villa’s first entry into the competition.

Andy was born in Joppa, Scotland on 1st August 1864 and was the brother of Villa legend Archie Hunter.

Andy made his debut as a 15 year old on the 13th December 1879 after Villa had signed him from Vale of Leven FC and he went on to represent the club for four successive seasons from 1879-80 to 1882-83.

Andy became Villa’s first goalscorer in the FA Cup when he netted in the 1-1 draw in the FA Cup tie with Stafford Road on Saturday, 13 December 1879. Andy was also Villa’s youngest ever goalscorer - just 15 years old.

Andy’s final game came on 3rd March 1883 having reached a career best 5th Round of the FA Cup that season before having to retire from football through illness and a thigh injury aged just 18.

Andy in a tragic twist of fate passed away of a heart attack on 12th June 1888 aged just 23 after emigrating to Australia. His older brother Archie would similarly suffer a heart attack less than two years later on 4th January 1890 in the 7-0 loss to Everton during which he suffered the heart attack having been believed at half time to have just fainted.
