Biography
Olly Whateley
Player #18 for Aston Villa, Oliver Whateley, known as Olly Whateley and nicknamed Daisy-Cutter, played as a forward for the club. Olly represented Villa between 1881-82 and 1885-86.
Olly was born in Coventry on 8th August 1861 and made his debut as a 20 year old on the 5th November 1881. Villa had signed Olly from Coventry FC and he went on to represent the club over four seasons.
In his book former team-mate and renowned Villa player Archie Hunter said of Olly:
โOliver Whateley was a hard worker and a clever player. He was the life and soul of the Villa team, being a good singer, one who could play the piano as well and was always a merry, good-tempered comrade. He came from the Aston Florence team and improved greatly during his stay with us, becoming ultimately one of the best forwards in the field and a deadly shot at goal. He was appropriately entitled the โDaisy-cutterโ as he always kept the ball low on the ground. He and Andy [Hunter] on the right were invincible.โ
The Villa News and Record of 1st September 1906 also paid tribute to Olly:
โA member of the old school of players who took to football as a duck of water. Took the Selection Committee by storm after a few big matches. As a deadly shot and goal-getter, he achieved quite a remarkable distinction, and probably scored more dazzling goals than any other player of his period. Aimed from almost any range. Slipping through opponents by his smart dribbling and clever feinting, he won position for himself with astonishing celerity. One of the diminishing โband of brothersโ who helped to build up Aston Villaโs early fame, and still kindly remembered.โ Olly played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role which from the 1884-85 season was led by George Ramsey.
Ollyโs final game for Villa came on 14th November 1885 at the age of 24 having made 19 FA Cup appearances, scoring 9 goals. His retirement was prompted by his cancer of the face, prematurely ending what promised to be a great Villa career.
Olly passed away in October 1926 in Birmingham aged 65.
