Ken Roberts

Player #434 for Aston Villa, Kenneth Roberts, known as Ken Roberts, and nicknamed Shunter, played as a forward for the club.

Ken played for Villa between 1951-52 and 1953-54 making 46 appearances and scoring 6 goals.

Ken was born in Crewe on 10 March 1931 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 22 March 1952 at the age of 21.

Villa had signed Ken from Cardiff City in June 1951 and he signed as a professional in August of that year.

Ken joined Villa as a result of some sterling displays in Army football, signing professional forms in August 1951 before acquitting himself well in Villa’s Central League team.

Ken made a scoring debut and ultimately made 8 appearances in his first season with the club. It was the following season however that saw Ken make his true mark on the Villa first team with 5 goals in 30 league appearances as he helped Villa to an 11th place finish.

That however would be as good as it got for Ken - who incidentally in the following campaign, 1953-54, shared a place in the squad with another Ken Roberts - a winger - known as Ken O Roberts to distinguish the pair.

The two Ken’s however did not play together with Ken O making his debut the month after Ken’s final appearance on Monday, 26 April 1954 at the age of 23 before moving on to Sutton Town.

Ken played under Villa managers George Martin and Eric Houghton. Ken passed away in 2019 aged 88.
