On This Day
  • Villa end the year eight games unbeaten, with five wins and fourth place in the League. Crucially Villa carry that momentum into the new year with a UEFA Cup campaign to look forward to and Champions League qualification on the cards. Indeed the only concern in Martin O'Neill's transformation of Villa is the strength of the squad outside the first XI as O'Neill's experimental Cup sides have repeatedly shown. Keeping clear of injuries, and maintaining form of key players could see a genuine top 4 tilt as 2009 beckoned with Villa in better shape than at any time in the last decade.

  • Brad Friedel makes his 25th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W16 D6 L3, 27 Goals Conceded at a rate of 1.08 goals per game, 8 Clean Sheets (32%) and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.

  • Nigel Reo-Coker secures his 30th win in a Villa shirt on his 64th appearance (62 Starts) to make it W30 D17 L17, 3 Goals, 4 Assists, 13 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.

  • Curtis Davies secures his 20th win in a Villa shirt on his 36th appearance (31 Starts) to make it W20 D10 L6, 1 Goal, 1 Assist and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.

What they Said

"It's beyond me - whether it was a penalty or it wasn't, he's given it.

"Some days you get bad days at the office because of referees, sometimes you get bad days at the office because of your players. Today was a good day at the office for my players but a bad day for the referee.

"When the referee makes a decision and gets overruled by a guy 45 yards away, who's in charge?"

Phil Brown on referee Steve Bennett.

"I've no idea why Ashley put his hand in the air. He's a very intelligent player and he told me he knew the ball was going over the bar. Gareth [Barry] asked him to consult his linesman and the linesman overruled him and that was a very brave decision by the referee, because he's now relying on the linesman being right. And as it turned out, it was the right decision."

Martin O’Neill on referee Steve Bennett.

"I think we are always capable of producing something, always capable of doing that.

"It was the same at West Ham. Just when you thought we had no more energy to give, then suddenly we produced a goal. I thought Hull were unfortunate but I will take the win — we have played matches this season where we have not got what we deserved. I'm delighted with the players, they keep going. They have conjured a win when it didn't look like it.

"I thought it was interesting to hear Arsène Wenger say he felt they [Arsenal] were below par after a big, big effort at Villa Park. I wouldn't agree too often with Arsène but I think he may well have a point.

"I thought it was a big effort from us to come back. Maybe I was expecting a bit more jauntiness from us and it wasn't there, but we have won. We have been on the go since July and we have got a tough couple of months ahead of us. I thought that was beginning to show then Young produced a bit of magic.

"I am ecstatic – 38 points on the board from 20 games is fantastic going from the team.

"The players are delighted with themselves. They accept with every game the problems they have had to cope with and so far they have been up to the task."

Martin O’Neill.

"It wasn't a penalty.

"I'm delighted the right decision has been made and pleased we've won.

"We didn't play well, we struggled to create things but we just keep putting pressure on the sides around us."

Martin O'Neill.

*Villa leave it late*

A last-gasp Kamil Zayatte own goal handed Aston Villa a 1-0 win over Hull City and another late Premier League victory

Aston Villa struck with another late goal to beat Hull City 1-0 at the KC Stadium and regain fourth place in the Premier League.

After pegging back Arsenal with a last-gasp equaliser on Boxing Day, Martin O’Neill’s men did it again thanks to an own goal from City defender Kamil Zayatte.

The Guinea international sliced a cross from Ashley Young past Boaz Myhill in the 88th minute to hand the Tigers a third straight defeat.

It was rough luck on City who looked to have stopped the rot after conceding nine goals in their last two games and Phil Brown’s side have now won just once in their last 11 games.

They were denied the chance of a possible injury-time equaliser when referee Steve Bennett changed his mind over a penalty decision against Ashley Young for handball as Villa moved back into the UEFA Champions League places.

*Frustrated*

With five changes to the side that was hammered 5-1 at Manchester City on Boxing Day and given a public dressing down by Brown, the Tigers frustrated Villa and looked value for a share of the points as a first clean sheet since October beckoned.

Villa failed to make a worthwhile chance but have made a habit of forcing positive results and did it again when Ashley Young got away from Michael Ricketts and forced Zayatte into a rare error as they secured their fourth win in five games.

It was not without a scare, though, as Bennett pointed to the spot in injury time as a Luke Young header bounced against his own crossbar from a corner.

Ashley Young had raised an arm but did not make contact with the ball and Bennett changed his mind after Villa protests and consulting an assistant referee.

The Tigers were unfortunate not to take an early lead when Nicky Barmby was penalised for an aerial challenge on Villa keeper Brad Friedel, despite no apparent foul, before pressurising Nigel Reo-Coker into slicing the ball into his own net.

*Stalemate*

But the home side then went into defensive mode to create a stalemate for the rest of the first half as Villa failed to make any headway in attack.

Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young were well kept in check by the City defence, although Zayatte was punished with a yellow card for a foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Villa captain Gareth Barry was given one sight of goal but, with his unfavoured right foot, he volleyed over after Boaz Myhill had punched clear from a James Milner corner.

Both sides raised the tempo after the break with no shortage of commitment as they chased maximum points to finish the year on a high.

Barry and Stiliyan Petrov were both booked as Villa’s frustrations began to surface as a weak shot from the former was all they could muster as an attacking threat.

City had their moments going forward, with Bernard Mendy probing dangerously down the right and veteran Barmby toiling tirelessly up front.

Peter Halmosi had a shot blocked by Luke Young but City’s only real chance fell to Barmby as he headed a Mendy cross against Reo-Coker.

The Tigers then looked to settle for a point but even that was denied in a dramatic finale as Villa continued to march on with a seventh away win.
