What they Said
โNot sure what Mr Gold is after other than publicity. When you get down in the mud and wrestle with a pig, the pig loves it - and you get muddy. I think I will just let him to continue to talk.โ
Villa non-executive director General Charles Krulak on Birmingham owner and sex shop proprietor David Gold.
โI know how it is to everyone in terms of importance and a special game. You can feel on the pitch that it is a special game. The days before, the week before, you can feel from people that it is such a big occasion. The fans really care about this game and we do as well, but at the end of the day, we have to treat it just as a normal game. If you win, you don't get four points - you only get three.โ
Martin Laursen.
โI am delighted that we won because the game could have gone either way.
โBirmingham never gave up when they went behind and when they got their equaliser it really opened up.
โI always thought that the next goal would win it and I am just pleased that it went to us.โ
Martin OโNeill.
---
โI scored at St Andrewโs and to score at their ground there was no better feeling to be honest, at such a young age as well.
โI was on the post for the corner when Liam Ridgewell headed it I thought this canโt go in so obviously Iโve put a foot out and cleared it off the line.
โI was thinking to myself โwe canโt lose this gameโ. It means that much to the fans that itโs a game that you just do not lose.
โItโs not worth living in the city afterwards if you lose that game.
โTo go to the other end and score so quickly after doing thatโฆ I donโt think you can describe the emotion and the adrenaline that you go through,.
โEspecially when you see how much it means to the fans celebrating, jumping on the pitch, itโs one of the best moments in my career.
โLater that season we beat them 5-1 at home.
โI remember before the game we were so confident with the group of players that we had we just knew that we were going to win the game, if that makes sense. Thatโs a great feeling in football, going out there knowing youโre going to win and we had that.
โIt was a question of who scores first really between the team-mates. To finally get my goal, the last goal in the game, you could see by the celebration I was over he moon.โ
Gabby Agbonlahor, 2018
*Gabriel Agbonlahorโs late header gave Aston Villa a dramatic victory over city rivals Birmingham.*
Villa had taken the lead when Stilian Petrovโs low cross hit Bluesโ defender Liam Ridgewellโs knee and bounced in.
Birmingham levelled when Daniel De Ridder crossed for Mikael Forssell to head home from close range.
Agbonlahor cleared a Ridgewell header off the line before meeting Ashley Youngโs cross at the other end and nodding past Blues keeper Maik Taylor.
The victory was Villaโs first on their travels since they won at Manchester City on 28 April and, in truth, it was an unlikely triumph.
A draw had looked the fairest result as, although Villa had the best of the early exchanges, the home side had been in charge after the break.
Birmingham actually came out of the blocks quickest too but found themselves behind after Ridgewellโs own goal on 11 minutes.
Petrov had done well to reach the bye-line and his dangerous cross embarrassed the former Villa trainee - who only left to join Birmingham in August - when it hit his knee and flew past Taylor.
Villa pushed forward for more and only smart saves by Taylor at his near post denied John Carew and Agbonlahor.
Birmingham were finding it much harder to carve out a chance, although they did have two decent shouts for a penalty when Zat
Knight appeared to handle Cameron Jeromeโs cross and De Ridder was caught by Martin Laursen.
The De Ridder incident was particularly unfortunate for the Blues as, although Laursen undoubtedly made contact with the Dutch winger, referee Steve Bennett booked him for diving.
But Steve Bruceโs side continued to fight on and the introduction of Forssell at half-time gave them a way back into the game.
De Ridder was seeing more and more of the ball on the right and it was from one of his crosses that Forssell rose to nod home the equaliser on 62 minutes.
It was no less than Birmingham deserved and they almost took the lead when Scott Carson pushed away Jeromeโs powerful drive.
Villa were suddenly on the back-foot, although they still threatened when the ball broke to Nigel Reo-Coker in front of goal, only for the midfielder skied his shot hopelessly over the bar.
That had looked like the visitorsโ final chance of victory and they were hanging on when Agbonlahor somehow cleared Ridgewellโs powerful downward header on his own goal-line.
And the Birmingham fans were still wondering how their side had failed to score when the England Under-21 striker snatched victory for his side with three minutes to go.
Agbonlahor beat Ridgewell to Youngโs cross from the right and, although Taylor got a hand to his flicked header, he could not keep it out.
*Aston Villa manager Martin OโNeill:*
โI am delighted that we won because the game could have gone either way.
โBirmingham never gave up when they went behind and when they got their equaliser it really opened up.
โI always thought that the next goal would win it and I am just pleased that it went to us.โ
