On This Day
  • Martin O'Neill's mass changes backfire as Villa are knocked out of the League Cup by Championship side Leicester.

  • Villa have now lost three games this season, all of which have been by a single goal.

  • Centre back Curtis Davies makes his debut appearance for Villa after joining on a season long loan from West Bromwich Albion in August 2007 ahead of a permanent move arranged for August 2008 to become the 804th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.

  • Stuart Taylor makes his 10th start in a Villa shirt (12 Appearances) to make it W3 D5 L4, 18 Goals Conceded at a rate of 1.50 goals per game and 2 Clean Sheets so far in his Villa career.

What they Said

“I did everything wrong.

"You are only as good as your last game - and my last game was that which doesn't merit a pub game for me. I was that poor.

”If you get a chance like me and blow it like I did, you can't go complaining when you don't get your chance. I'm going to have to go back into training and hopefully I will get the nod sooner rather than later and I can reveal the real Curtis Davies and not the evil twin that played against Leicester.

"I set my standards high and, for me, that was a poor performance. If I wasn't so poor, I wouldn't have been taken off. It is the first time I've been substituted in my life for playing reasons. I've just got to pick myself up and improve. I set my standards high. I've been talking myself up in the press, saying that I'm ready, and, by that performance against Leicester, I'm far from it. I'm hoping it is a one-off because I don't have many games like that. I [want to] prove to the Villa fans, if given the chance, that I am a good player.

"On this performance, I haven't given the manager any headaches. Martin Laursen is going to play against Tottenham and I'll be lucky to get on the bench. I've gone out there and done absolutely nothing for my chances. It is not the result I wanted and not the performance I wanted. I was awful, basically. No excuses at all.

"I've been training well, I feel fit, I've played well in the reserves - I know the reserves is different to the first team but I felt good. I just wasn't any good [on Wednesday]. Everything I did was wrong. It just didn't happen for me and I don't know why. At the end of the day I've got to impress these Villa fans better than I did against Leicester."

Curtis Davies on his debut.

*Matty Fryatt’s goal gave Championship side Leicester City a shock victory at Aston Villa in the Carling Cup.*

A much-changed Villa side were poor early on with only Shaun Maloney threatening, while Iain Hume went close with a near-post header for the Foxes.

Fryatt broke the deadlock with 16 minutes left, running clear and firing past Stuart Taylor from a tight angle.

The home side came to life when Patrik Berger, Ashley Young and Luke Moore came on - but Leicester held on to win.

Villa boss Martin O’Neill won this competition in 1997 and 2000 when he was in charge of the Foxes but his old club ensured he will have to wait to complete his hat-trick.

O’Neill decided to shuffle his squad, handing defender Curtis Davies his debut and bringing Taylor, Marlon Harewood, Stiliyan Petrov, Isaiah Osbourne and Maloney into the starting line-up.

But, apart from a piledriver from Maloney that forced Leicester keeper Martin Fulop into a fine save, the home team rarely threatened.

Leicester’s best opportunity fell to Hume in a first half that saw few real chances.

Villa did improve after the restart and Fulop did well to keep out Harewood’s header from an inswinging Gareth Barry free-kick.

But it was Leicester who took the lead when Fryatt latched on to a James Chambers’ pass and slotted past Taylor.

O’Neill made three substitutions to try to shake up his team in response and Maloney almost levelled when Fulop tipped his dipping free-kick around the post.

Gabriel Agbonlahor hooked the ball over the bar from close range in injury time as Villa continued to press but Leicester hung on to reach the fourth round.
