Jack Thompson

Player #275 for Aston Villa, John George Thompson, known as Jack Thompson played as a right back for the club.

Jack played for Villa in 1919-20 and 1920-21 making 27 appearances.

Jack was born in Cramlington, Northumberland in July 1900 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on 15 November 1919 aged 19.

Villa had signed Jack from Ashington in September 1919.

Jack had an immediate impact on the first team, becoming a regular pick in the defence through to February 1920.

Jack made 17 League appearances in his first season but did not feature in the successful FA Cup campaign including playing in the FA Cup Final victory over Huddersfield Town in front of a crowd of 50,018 at Stamford Bridge.

Asked if he was nervous match ahead of his debut match against West Bromwich Albion: , he is reported to have replied “Why no, I fought against the Germans!”.

A longer career with the Villa for Jack was prevented by the emergence of Tommy Smart and he played his final game on 5 March 1921 having made his FA Cup debut for the club and 9 league appearances that season.

Jack moved on to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1921.

Jack played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Jack passed away in 1970 aged 70.
