George Copley
Player #13 for Aston Villa, George Henry Copley played as a goalkeeper for the club. Making his debut in the 1880-81 FA Cup campaign, he was to remain active with Villa for two seasons.
George had previously played in Villa’s first ever game in February 1875 vs. Aston Park and was a Founder Member and Honorary Secretary of Villa from foundation in May 1874.
George was the second custodian of the Villa goal in FA Cup football.
George was born in Birmingham, just 3 miles from the current Villa ground, in February 1861 and made his debut as a 19 year old. Villa had signed him from Birmingham St George’s and was to appear on five occasions across the 1880-81 and 1881-82 seasons.
George’s final game came on 5th November 1881 before his retirement aged just 20. George emigrated to Ceylon, Sri Lanka shortly after.
George played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role.
George passed away in Birmingham in 1939 aged 69.
