MATCH SUMMARY

🕒 | HT Aston Villa 1-0 Everton. Villa’s first goal of the season amidst an extraordinarily passive performance, admittedly in the searing heat, punctured by the midfield quality of Boubacar Kamara and superb link up between McGinn, Watkins and Ings but Villa’s sheer inability to defend set pieces continues to astound.

🕒 | FT Aston Villa 2-1 Everton. Everton’s sheer physicality right on the edge of acceptability changed the shape of the second half forcing a bizarre own goal but yet again it was Emiliano Buendía who changed the tempo, adding the second and opening the game up as a spectacle.

ON THIS DAY

Without a win in five and just two wins in the past twelve, Steven Gerrard’s 30th game in charge of Villa, and first home game of the season, sees the novice boss under real pressure to get a result against a team they put three past without reply under Dean Smith this time last season.

Gerrard’s pre match view provided a typically curious mixed message from a manager whose instructions to his players often seem equally as muddled.

“I must also say that taking over from a local person who had a lot of success here was difficult from a personal point of view. But I think after a couple of windows and six months in the job I think it is fair people say ‘Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa’ because we have had time to shape it and get it close to how we want it to look and put our own stamp on it.”

Hopefully Gerrard didn’t *really* mean 9 points from a possible 36 was part of the plan.

Meanwhile Matty Cash makes his 70th appearance for Villa after joining from Forest in September 2020.

TEAM NEWS

Steven Gerrard changes formation after the opening day horrors on the South Coast but there is still no place in the starting line up for Emiliano Buendía as the often ineffective Philippe Coutinho once again takes his place.

Tyrone Mings is recalled to the side after the self inflicted furore from Gerrard seven days ago with Ezri Konsa dropping to the bench.

Playing three up top Leon Bailey is dropped as Ollie Watkins is brought back.

Douglas Luiz remains on the bench despite Boubacar Kamara’s arrival now allowing the Brazilian’s undoubted talent to be used further up the field and Calum Chambers continues to be unable to buy a game.

Only Cameron Archer represents the youth on the bench as Gerrard’s loan cull of the under 23 talent takes effect.

MATCHDAY QUOTES

On Emiliano Buendía:

“But you don’t pick the team, do you? I make them decisions. We’ve got good players. We’ve got really good options in the final third and Emi Buendia will start football matches in this team for me.

“He was winning the race for a starting slot and he got a muscle injury in a behind-closed-doors against Fulham. He missed close to a week and his training performance was slightly off from where he was prior to the injury so we’ve been patient with him and haven’t felt the need to risk him and start him from the beginning because of the muscle injury which you don’t know about.

“So before you point stuff my way, you need to get the right information intact. I think I’ve done the right thing with Emi which is to protect his health. We put him on today when the team needed energy and quality and he delivered. Nobody’s a bigger fan than Emi Buendia than me.”

On Tyrone Mings:

“First and foremost there hasn’t been much talk, focus or attention inside the building but I certainly understand when we make a decision like that… externally there will be a lot of focus and a lot of noise on that. We can’t control that.

“I think it’s important for me again to repeat, ‘We think that Tyrone Mings is a fantastic footballer with big attributes and he’s someone who’s going to be a big help to me and the team moving forward’.

“He hasn’t been stripped of his place in the team. He was injured last weekend and wasn’t fully fit so we decided to go a different way but, today and building into today’s game, he’s focused really well. I thought he was really good and dominant for large parts of the game today and he played his part in a really important win for us.

“I cannot control what is said outside Aston Villa, it is important for me to say that yes, we made a decision to change the captain, and I made that decision because I wanted my own stamp on that position. No one has taken Tyrone Mings out of the team. He was injured last week, he came back, trained really well and was really good today. Credit to him.”

On the game:

“I’m really pleased with our level of performance.

“I believed that if we found that level there would be a different outcome from last week.

“What we put in this week, the quality and the goals we scored, no-one can challenge the outcome, I thought we deserved it.

“We looked a different team today. It was tough conditions for both sets of players, but they were excellent in terms of the game plan. We really wanted to make it about their back three, and both goals have come off that.”

**Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia scored to get Aston Villa’s Premier League campaign up and running with victory over Everton as Steven Gerrard got one over on his old midfield rival Frank Lampard.**

The two were facing each other as managers for the first time after years of battles on the pitch in games between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Both had overseen losses in their Premier League openers and it was Gerrard’s side who claimed their first win of the season with a dominant display at Villa Park.

The home side looked on it from the start and got the breakthrough midway through the first half when Ollie Watkins, making his first start of the season, found strike partner Ings inside the box and he turned sharply before firing clinically into the back of the net.

Everton, once again playing without a recognised striker, did not manage a shot on target in the first half, although they did see an Anthony Gordon effort ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside.

Substitute Buendia saw a deflected shot cleared off the line as Vila pressed for a second, which duly arrived in the closing stages when Buendia stabbed in following a good move.

Lucas Digne turned a cross into his own net immediately after to give Everton hope, and they staged a late rally as Gordon was twice denied by Martinez, but Villa held firm to take the three points.

Villa bounce back as Mings returns

Villa desperately needed a good start to this season after they finished last term with just two wins from their final 10 games, and that poor form continued with a 2-0 loss at newly promoted Bournemouth in their opening game.

Gerrard caused a stir by replacing Tyrone Mings with John McGinn as the Villa captain and starting Mings on the bench against the Cherries, but the former Liverpool captain will probably have felt somewhat vindicated by his decision during this game.

There were no signs of disharmony as Mings put in an assured performance on his return to the first XI, while it was McGinn’s brilliance that led to the opening goal as he won the ball off McNeil before playing a superb pass to Watkins, who then teed up Ings to score.

Villa really should have been out of sight by the time Buendia added a second and the late Everton pressure will have given Gerrard some discomfort - but overall this was a decent Villa display that will provide encouragement for the fans about the season ahead.

Lampard clearly targeted his defence as an area for improvement over the summer with former Burnley centre-back James Tarkowski making his debut in last weekend’s defeat at Chelsea and on-loan Wolves defender Conor Coady starting in this game.

It was an area that certainly needed improving after Everton came close to being relegated last season but this game again highlighted their deficiencies at the other end of the pitch.

They did not manage a shot on target until eight minutes into the second half and it took a slice of fortune to get them back into the game through the own goal.

Everton’s late pressure was encouraging but it is clear the Toffees need reinforcements in attack if they are to avoid another difficult season.
