Team News
Steven Gerrard brings Ezri Konsa back into the side in a three man central defensive pick alongside Calum Chambers and Tyrone Mings.
Jacob Ramsey misses his first squad since being rested for Chelsea in September as he recovers from a groin injury.
Emiliano Buendía makes a welcome and well deserved return after recent strong cameo performances as Philippe Coutinho is dropped to the bench.
Douglas Luiz also returns in place of Tim Iroegbunam despite the youngster’s strong full debut last time out.
Danny Ings comes in after his equally strong performance up front alongside Ollie Watkins against Norwich as Leon Bailey is injured once again.

On This Day
Things WE always knew: Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings CAN play together; Emiliano Buendía > Philippe Coutinho.
Super John McGinn makes his 140th start in a Villa shirt (143 Appearances) since joining in the Championship years in August 2018 to make it W55 D31 L57, 16 Goals, 18 Assists and 38 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Tyrone Mings records his 50th win in a Villa shirt on his 124th appearance (123 Starts) to make it W50 D22 L52, 7 Goals, 7 Assists, 28 Bookings and 2 Red Cards so far in his Villa career.
Ollie Watkins becomes one of just nine players to have scored 10 or more Premier League goals in each of the last two campaigns, and one of only four Englishmen to do so along with Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Raheem Sterling.
What they Said
“I was pleased with a lot of things; the points are the most important thing.
“If I’m being honest. I thought it was a really strong away performance. With all due respect I thought we were better and stronger in every department.
“Obviously, it was slightly frustrating we didn’t see it out and get that clean sheet because I thought our performance didn’t deserve that but I won’t let it spoil what was a fantastic performance across the board today. There were a lot of strong performances from the boys.
“We’ve shown we can be strong away from home and we were better in every department today, with all due respect.
“I put it on them before the game. I said, ‘Look, we’ve got a lot of people in the team that are going to fight and do the dirty work but it’s important, in our moments, that the front three go and win us the game’.
“When our moments came, we showed our quality, we were ruthless 🥊 in front of goal. The front three won us the game, but everyone stood up today.
“You saw it last week with [Danny] Ings and [Ollie] Watkins; they got us the goals and looked dangerous as a pair. A lot of people on the outside don’t believe in [their partnership], I certainly do. We gave Emi Buendia a chance and I thought he was fantastic, really creative.”
“It was a realty strong away performance against a side who have taken 10 out of 12 points in a really good moment.
“This is a tough place to come so my players deserve a lot of credit.
“Danny and Ollie can be a real threat together and I thought the service from little Emi was outstanding.
“John [McGinn] was the back up, if you like, with his cross and quality. The three goals we’ve scored were really outstanding in different ways.
“You have to remember that we’ve come up against a team here who were in a great place, 10 points out of 12 and on the back of that manager bounce. The boys have come to a tough place and put in a right top performance. I’m delighted with it and, before the game, the team talk was all about purpose.
“We knew Burnley had a big purpose today, we knew it was a really important game for them but I said to the players ours has got to mean more. That’s to try and finish as high as we can in the top-10. We’ve pushed closer to that and there’s always a purpose in football. It’s important we don’t let this season fizzle out - and that was my message to the players.
“We have been a really strong away team in the main; when our moments come, we’ve proved we can be ruthless 🥊. But this was up there with our best. We’ve been indifferent at home, so we know what we need to work on.
“There should be a freshness about us because we only play once a week; the lads have prepared well. We’re in a good place and we’ve got a tough game on Tuesday [against Liverpool] but we’ll make a couple of changes and rest up to make sure the team is ready.
“It is about enjoying tonight; it puts us closer to where we want to be.
“No, Phil [Coutinho] was (not disappointed) to miss out. There’s not much ego in this group. They’re a right good set of lads.
"The schedule, we’ve been playing one game a week/two weeks which isn’t enough. We want to be in a place where the games come thick and fast.
“We want Philippe Coutinho here.
“We’ve just entered the period where it’s going to change with five games in a short space of time. Phil and Emi will both get enough game time to keep them satisfied. They know that you can’t go Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday all of the time. Phil understood it.
“He’s played a lot and respected and understood that Emi deserves to play now and again as well - plus there’s the option of playing them both as well.
“I thought he [Emiliano Buendía] was terrific.
“Look, we’ve got five games in 15/16 days. I don’t think it’s fair to ask any of the players to play all of them.
“Emi’s showed me that he’s ready. He trained very well and I gave him an opportunity today and he took it.
“I’m delighted to have them both. There will be different challenges and tests for them both and they can’t play in all the games and have all the minutes. I’m the lucky one who has both options.”
Steven Gerrard.
”It was a great performance; it is always difficult coming here and we dealt with their long balls really well.
“They didn’t have many clear chances, we were good on set pieces and we scored three good goals. A lot of positives to take.
“We came here last year and went 1-0 up only to lose 3-2; they kept coming at us and we didn’t deal with their long balls. We knew we had to do that and we punished them at the other end.
“Scoring early breaks the ice and we knew the importance of that third goal; if they scored it they’d have had momentum. It is nice to get into double figures for goals and we are hoping to get top-10.
“We need to keep the momentum going.”
Ollie Watkins
**Danny Ings scored against his former club as Burnley’s survival chances suffered a huge setback against Aston Villa at Turf Moor.**
Ings, who spent four years with the Clarets before moving to Liverpool in 2015, did not celebrate after tucking past Nick Pope, having been put through by Emiliano Buendia.
Argentine Buendia, starting in place of Philippe Coutinho who was on the bench, then scored with a deflected finish after being picked out inside the box by Lucas Digne.
Ollie Watkins added to the home side’s misery when he was left unmarked to head the third after John McGinn’s cross.
Burnley had won their previous three games to give themselves hope of avoiding relegation, but they were back to their bad old habits.
Wout Weghorst headed a couple of chances wide and went close with another attempt on the turn, while Dwight McNeil forced a couple of saves before substitute Maxwel Cornet scored a consolation in stoppage time.
With three games remaining, Burnley are 16th in the table, two points clear of Everton, who are third from bottom but have two games in hand.
Leeds, who are directly below the Clarets in 17th, are level on 34 points with Burnley but have one game in hand.
“The league didn’t finish today,” said Burnley caretaker boss Mike Jackson. “You have to find a way of moving forward.
“It’s about how you react. We have a bit of time before our next game.”
Clarets in big trouble
Burnley looked down and out after slumping to 18th, four points from safety, before 10 points from four games under Jackson raised hopes they could avoid the drop.
But Villa delivered a huge blow to their survival hopes as the home side unravelled.
The Clarets looked a different side to the one that has secured hard-earned wins against Southampton, Wolves and Watford since Sean Dyche’s departure.
There was no marking for Watkins’ third goal while time and again they carelessly switched off and gifted their opponents possession.
The Clarets will drop back into the relegation zone on Sunday if Leeds avoid defeat at Arsenal and Everton win at Leicester.
Jackson knows he now has to lift his players and make sure they get this result out of their system quickly as they face back-to-back away games against Tottenham and Villa before entertaining Newcastle on the final day of the season.
With Ben Mee still absent, Jackson will hope James Tarkowski makes a swift recovery after the defender was forced off with a hamstring problem.
‘We want Coutinho’
Villa’s sixth win in 12 away games under Steven Gerrard all but secures their place in the Premier League for another season.
Manager Gerrard has been frustrated at his side’s lack of consistency and said before this game that the team had “underachieved” this season.
He faces a busy summer in the transfer market and one of the first decisions he has to make is whether to sign Coutinho permanently.
The arrival of the former Liverpool playmaker on loan from Barcelona in January included the option to buy the 29-year-old for £33m.
However, Gerrard opted to start the impressive Buendia instead of Coutinho at Turf Moor.
But the Villa boss made it clear after the game he wants to keep the player and explained he did not start Coutinho because he wanted fresh legs for Tuesday’s home game against his former club Liverpool.
“We want Philippe Coutinho here,” added Gerrard. “We have got five games in a short pace of time and the same players cannot go Saturday-Tuesday all the time.”
