On This Day
A worryingly flat Villa fail to turn up again and lose successive games to sides at the foot of the table in a performance very similar to the final days of former boss Dean Smith.
Steven Gerrard’s loss rate sits at 50.00% after 14 games in charge of Villa with a record of W5 D2 L7 at a win rate of 35.71% delivering 1.21 points per game so far in his Villa management career.
Dean Smith had been relieved of his duties in November 2021 with a record of 1.41 points per game, a win rate of 40.29% and a loss rate of 39.57%.
John McGinn makes his 130th start in a Villa shirt (133 Appearances) to make it W50 D30 L53, 16 Goals, 17 Assists and 36 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Emiliano Buendía makes his 20th start in a Villa shirt (24 Appearances) to make it W7 D4 L13, 2 Goals, 3 Assists and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.
Danny Ings makes his 15th start in a Villa shirt (19 Appearances) since joining in August 2021 to make it W6 D2 L11, 4 Goals, 2 Assists and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
This is the first 3.00pm Saturday fixture at Villa Park since Steven Gerrard’s first game in charge, on Saturday, 20 November 2021.
The opposition, Watford, didn’t feature a single homegrown player in their squad of 20 and only three players from the home nations of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
What they Said
“It’s not too much different from my reaction last week.
“I’m really frustrated and disappointed with the result and the outcome of the game.
“We’ve lacked quality in the final third, that’s for sure, and I’ve had a really honest conversation with the players.
“We need to wake up and wake up fast because our recent form and our recent performances are way short in order to move up this table.
“I made one change. I thought Danny looked lively but he tired a little as the game went on.
“He’ll probably point towards needing more game time which I understand.
“I tried to make a few more changes and to be aggressive as the game went on because we were looking for a breakthrough.
“Listen, we’ve got in a lot of good areas today. We had a lot of the ball. The game panned out exactly as we thought.
“We knew it would be on us to force the breakthrough but we lacked quality in the final third and we had one shot on target out of 19 which isn’t enough.
“That, for me, tells me it’s a quality issue.
“That’s gotta come from within the dressing room.
“In previous games we’ve had that creation, invention and have looked exciting in a lot of games but, certainly, in the last two, I need to demand more of my players in the final third because we’re getting into crossing positions.
“We’ve got really talented players and it’s got to come from within. Players have to stand up and be counted.
“I’ll take the heat and the pressure is on me, of course it is, but when it’s a quality issue in the final third, it’s gotta come from within the dressing room as well.
“Young for Cash was a tactical change.
“He was on a yellow card so it’s a combination of him being on a yellow and tactical.
“We know we were getting down the right-hand side and we were looking to throw something different at it.
“But, because Watford were looking quite dangerous on the counter attack, I thought we might have to stop the game at certain points and, [with Matty Cash] on a yellow card, you can leave yourself vulnerable.
“The last thing you need is to get a red card in that situation so I thought it was the right decision for the team.
“I wanted to throw two at it, two up top, try to make it more about the central defenders [so took off Douglas Luiz for Ollie Watkins].
“I didn’t think we needed a holding midfielder in that position at the time. We were controlling the game, getting in the right areas and I needed more bodies in the box and I needed more of a goal threat there.
“I felt like we were lacking something in the final third so I wanted to take someone who was playing deep out of the game and to be more ambitious and more aggressive.
“The result is the same, that’s the reality. We carried the frustration on from last week.
“That’s on me, we’ve only taken one point from our last three games.
“It’s a bad combination in football when you concede goals and don’t score many.
“I need to take that on my shoulders and the players need to as well. We need to stick together.
“I’m not going to grasp at straws, the reality is we never had enough quality in the final third. We didn’t creative enough. Ben Foster didn’t have enough to do, especially at home.
“It’s not difficult for me to motivate the players, but motivating yourself comes from within. That’s on you as a footballer.”
Steven Gerrard.
**Emmanuel Dennis’ late header gave Roy Hodgson his first goal and first win as Watford boss, and earned the Hornets a valuable win at Aston Villa.**
Villa dominated proceedings but Watford grabbed all three points when Dennis powered home Ismaila Sarr’s 78th-minute cross after an opportunistic counter-attack.
It ended the visitors’ four-game goal drought and saw them move up to 18th in the table, four points from safety.
The defeat for Villa means Steven Gerrard’s side are now winless in seven of their past eight matches.
Hornets end barren streak
Incredibly, Watford’s last six Premier League away wins have now come under six different managers.
The Hornets’ managerial merry-go-round has been well reported, and new boss Hodgson already seemed under pressure coming into this fixture after collecting just one point from an available nine since taking charge in January.
As the game went on, Watford were on course to drop to the bottom of the league table with results going against them elsewhere, and looked set to equal a club record of five consecutive games without a goal.
The Hornets soaked up plenty of Villa pressure, and twice went close through Dennis and Moussa Sissoko on the break.
Sarr, starting his first match since winning the Africa Cup of nations with Senegal, created the winner, chipping the ball up for Dennis to nod in.
The Hornets held on for their first victory in 12 matches, since beating Manchester United 4-1 in November.
Sloppy Villa slip to another defeat
Having started his reign at Aston Villa with four wins from six matches, Gerrard has now seen his side lose four of their past eight. The Villains are closer to the relegation zone than they are to a place in Europe.
The hosts were the better side throughout and should have gone in front in the 34th minute, when Danny Ings struck the base of the right post when clean through after a good move from Emi Buendia.
They continued to create half-chances, with Phillipe Coutinho curling a looping effort onto the roof of the net midway through the second half. But once they fell behind, the opportunities dried up.
Despite coming into this fixture as one of three teams to have scored in every home game this season, Villa failed to find a leveller, and stay 12th in the table.
They will face Brighton & Hove Albion next Saturday, while Watford will host Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
