What they Said
"Villa went into the game on the back of an appalling Premiership away record - just five wins in the last 41 matches - but they ensured there was never any chance of Wycombe causing an upset."
Juan Pablo Angel scored his first hat-trick for Aston Villa as they ruthlessly destroyed Wycombe to reach the third round of the Carling Cup.
The Colombian international took his goal tally to six in the last four matches as Lawrie Sanchez’s side were outclassed.
Villa went into the game on the back of an appalling Premiership away record - just five wins in the last 41 matches - but they ensured there was never any chance of Wycombe causing an upset.
Summer capture Gavin McCann continued his impressive form in the centre of midfield while Ulises de la Cruz caught the eye at right-back.
Villa went ahead with the first senior goal from England Under-19 international Peter Whittingham.
Angel delivered a low right-wing cross which found Whittingham in acres of space and his left-footed shot from 15 yards flew into the corner of the net.
Angel took his own personal goal tally to four in four games with a blistering finish just after the half hour.
Midfielder McCann was the creator with a pass into the path of Angel who needed only one touch before drilling an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
That appeared to knock the fight out of Wycombe and when Gavin Holligan found himself with a rare half chance he sent a weak low effort straight at Thomas Sorensen.
Any hopes of a Wycombe revival were killed off by two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the second half from Angel which completed his treble.
The first came when he broke clear of the Wycombe defence and was blatantly pushed over in the penalty area by Dannie Bulman.
Williams was booked for protesting but he was given no chance from the spot-kick as he was sent the wrong way by Angel.
Angel made it a treble when he netted from close range after 55 minutes as Williams parried away a shot from De la Cruz.
Wycombe’s best effort came when Darren Currie was only just too high with a powerful shot from the edge of the area.
Lee Hendrie and McCann could have added to the lead before Darius Vassell completed the rout from the penalty spot after he had been brought down by Chris Vinnicombe.
