Shorn of Allan Evans, serving a two match suspension, and gifting Ipswich an opener through a mistake by Ken McNaught, Villa were already up against it when Des Bremner repeated the trick to allow Bobby Robson’s side to open a two goal lead after 79 minutes.
Gary Shaw pulled one back on 82' but both before and after that Ron Saunders’ side had the opportunities to win at a canter.
Scarcely believably though, after the Suffolk’s side lucky win in the reverse encounter they did so again, to reduce Villa’s lead at the head of the table to one point with four to play. Villa we still the team to beat.
Ron Saunders' Villa lose to championship rivals Ipswich to allow the Portman Road club to close within a point of leaders Villa.

"We threw it away. When we gave Ipswich an early goal it was like walking into a right-hander.
“The title is no longer In our hands. But until it is mathematically impossible, I fancy us."
Ron Saunders.
"I would have been happy with a draw but I'm absolutely delighted now.”
Ipswich captain Mick Mills.
