Wally Roberts

Player #26 for Aston Villa, Walter David Roberts, known as Wally Roberts played as a forward for the club. Wally represented Villa in the 1882-83 and 1883-84 FA Cup campaigns.

Wally was born in Stourbridge in July 1859 and made his debut as a 23 year old on 21st October 1882.

Villa had signed Wally from Norton FC and he went on to represent the club 5 times across the two seasons.

Wally scored his single goal for Villa in the 5-1 1st Round defeat of Walsall Swifts at The Chuckery in the 1883-84 FA Cup campaign.

Wally’s final game for Villa came on the 19th January 1884 at the age of 24 before moving on to Church FC.

Wally played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role.

Wally passed away in 1914 aged 55.
