George Shutt

Player #157 for Aston Villa, George Hartley Shutt, known as George Shutt played as a full back for the club.

George played for Villa between 1901-02 and 1903-04 making 42 appearances.

George was born in Burnley on 18th July 1875 and made his first appearance for the club as a 26 year old on 5th October 1901.

Villa had signed George from Millwall Athletic and made his most significant contribution in the 1901-02 season with 24 league appearances.

George followed that with 15 starts in the 1902-03 campaign.

Although not a regular with the Villa over the longer term, George was described as an “intelligent, sure-tackling defender” and went on to qualify as one of the youngest referees on the League list.

George played his last game for Villa on 10th October 1903 and moved on to Hucknall Town in May 1904.

George had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

George passed away in Brierfield, Lancashire in October 1950 aged 75.
