Player #19 for Aston Villa, Albert William Clarke, known as Billy Clarke played as a goalkeeper for the club. Billy represented Villa between 1881-82 and 1883-84.
Billy was born in Walsall, ten miles from Villaโs current ground, on 7th July 1860 and made his debut as a 21 year old in the New Yearโs Eve match of 1881 against Notts County at Wellington Road.
Villa had signed Billy from Wednesbury Old Athletic and he went on to be the third custodian of the Villa goal in FA Cup football going on to represent the club seven times, conceding 15 goals without keeping a clean sheet at a ratio of 2.14 goals per game.
Ironically Billyโs final game for Villa also came over the Christmas period, this time on the 29th December 1883 at the age of 23. Billy moved on to Bilston Town shortly thereafter.
Billy played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role.
Billy passed away in 1934 in Birmingham aged 74.
