Match Media
On This Day
  • Villa remain undefeated under Martin O'Neill as they beat Scunthorpe in the League Cup 2nd Round.

  • Villa avoid the O'Leary trap of lower league humiliation in the Cup with plenty to spare as Martin O'Neill had now opened the season 6 unbeaten.

  • Meanwhile Randy Lerner officially takes over Villa after reaching the requisite threshold to take the club into his hands.

  • Milan Baroš secures his 10th win in a Villa shirt on his 33rd appearance (29 Starts) but it only comes against League One Scunthorpe, and Baroš, relegated to the subs bench for the 3rd consecutive game, yet to start under new boss Martin O’Neill and without a goal in 6, and no assist in 20 looks a far cry from the player who had started his Villa career with such a bang. Baroš makes it W10 D12 L11, 12 Goals, 6 Assists and 6 Bookings at a goal involvement rate of one for every 2.06 games he has played so far in his Villa career. His first 20 starts had brought 15 goal involvements at a rate of 1.40 per game.

  • Gavin McCann secures his 40th win in a Villa shirt on his 102nd appearance to make it W40 D31 L31, 4 Goals, 3 Assists, 21 Bookings and 2 Red Cards so far in his Villa career.

What they Said

"I am delighted that the purchase of Aston Villa has now gone through. The club has a magnificent heritage and, I believe, a very bright future. There are exciting times ahead. We plan to build a club that achieves success on a sustainable, long-term basis. Our plans will not come to fruition overnight. They will, however, be carefully considered and thought through and then clearly communicated to our supporters. Although it is early in the season, I would like to pay tribute to Martin O'Neill and his squad for the start they have made to the new campaign."

Randy Lerner.

"I think we could do with getting a bit more quality here. I’m not saying that he is going to come here and throw money like Chelsea have done. I don't think that's really in his nature but it doesn't mean that there's not some things we can put in place now and reap the rewards from later on."

Martin O’Neill.

"We have a chance, as every single team does, of getting into European football, it's a gateway.

"It's a million miles away at this minute, but you might as well go in strong.

"At this minute, it is important for us to go as strong as we can, just keep confidence going."

Martin O’Neill.

New chairman to impress or not, Martin O’Neill has always taken this competition seriously and it was no surprise that Villa were at full strength last night. The last team the Irishman sent out in this competition was Leicester City to win the 2000 final, and he clearly fancies a repeat.

Scunthorpe began at 100mph, as might have been expected, but kick and chase it wasn’t. Billy Sharp tested Thomas Sorensen’s reflexes and bravery in the second minute and Steve Foster blasted over as The Iron kept their visitors on the back foot. Villa’s new chairman Randy Lerner, watching with a considerable entourage, can only have been impressed by the sport’s depth on his first exposure to football life outside the Premiership because Villa, who lost in this competition at Doncaster last season, were under real pressure.

Gradually their extra class began to show. Twice they hit the bar, first when Juan Pablo Angel sidefooted Gabriel Agbonlahor’s cross and then when Gareth Barry shot from 22 yards. Three minutes before half-time Luke Moore outpaced Richard Hinds on to Sorensen’s long clearance and was brought down. Angel’s penalty was blocked by Joe Murphy but the Colombian turned in the rebound.

Fuelled by a sense of injustice Scunthorpe redoubled their efforts and Andy Keogh almost squeezed a shot past Sorensen. Villa scored again when Angel headed Aaron Hughes’s cross past Murphy but Sharp’s header from a corner ensured a lively final quarter.
