John Gregory’s Villa suffered their first defeat of the season and their first for 16 games. Gregory had named a much changed side and squad for this game.

Forward Darren Byfield made his final appearance for Villa aged 22 before moving on to Walsall FC in June 2000. Byfield had played for Villa in 1997-98 and 1998-99 making 10 appearances.

Midfielder Tommy Jaszczun made his sole appearance for Villa aged 21 before moving on to Blackpool for a fee of £63,000 in January 2000.
