How the worm turns
One of the most depressing features under the former manager was the media, especially the local media, spinelessly failing to call out the obvious during his reign.
Had they been honest sooner in all likelihood so would NSWE have acted.
So imagine our surprise when we read this quote from the Birmingham Mail's Villa correspondent this morning:
"I thought he was out of his depth. I thought the decision to hire him really back-fired. I felt it was the wrong call to make. He was a sexy name, a big name. They fired Dean Smith, who ended up with a better record."
"Michael Beale was holding [the former manager] up. I was told when he was given the job that Beale was the brains behind all this.
"Emiliano Martinez gave an interview last year and said he could not believe that the assistant manager was more vocal than the manager. That is coming from a player in the dressing room. He said it was all Michael Beale behind the scenes."
Woolly thinking
"He is a rookie manager. He did really well at Ibrox, winning the league, so there were signs of a good young manager there, but the wool was pulled over our eyes - the fans' eyes.
"Christian Purslow was certain he would deliver continuous improvement, but it has back-fired and Villa are in a relegation battle."
Birmingham Mail's Villa correspondent doubles down on the truth pill at last.
Nassef mood update
"Raging"

Bus w****r
After getting binned by Nassef, the former manager had to travel home on the bus with the squad, even his ego must have been pricked by that.
Embarrassing
"Embarrassing to be a part of"
"Does not represent us"
Super John McGinn opens up an hour before the former manager is dismissed. If that is his last act as captain it will almost have been worth the disruption to his game.
Board update
Aston Villa can confirm Gary McAllister, Neil Critchley, Tom Culshaw, Jordan Milsom and Scott Mason have all left the club following the departure of the Head Coach.
The Club would like to place on record its appreciation to them for their hard work and wish them well for the future.
First-team coach Aaron Danks will take charge of the team for Sunday’s Premier League match against Brentford at Villa Park and will be supported by additional Bodymoor Heath technical and coaching staff.
CEO Christian Purslow said: “The Board has come to this decision following a full evaluation of results and performances over the calendar year. We were clear when we appointed him that we set an objective of continuous improvement but that has not been achieved despite everybody’s best efforts and we believe the time is right to make these changes now.
“The process of appointing a new Head Coach is underway and we will update supporters as soon as possible.”
Smith vindicated
We were really building something under Dean Smith, we had a wobble, Purslow couldn't wait to pull the trigger, vindication is now there for Smith for all to see.
The only staff to survive the cull are those appointed by Dean Smith, just sayin'.
Appointed assistant manager by Smith in September 2021, Aaron Danks will take over as caretaker manager.
