Biography
W Trézéguet | 🇪🇬 | #932 |
Player #932 for Aston Villa, Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan, known as Trézéguet played as a winger for the club in the 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
Trézéguet was born in Kafr El-Sheikh, Egypt on 1 October 1994 and made his Villa debut age of 24 in the opening day Premier League match with Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, 10 August 2019.
Villa had signed Trézéguet from Kasımpaşa S.K. on 24 July 2019 for a fee of £9,000,000.
Trézéguet played the first four league matches of the 2019-20 campaign before being sent off in the controversial loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday, 31 August 2019. The subsequent ban enabled fellow winger Anwar El Ghazi to come into first team contention and over the next 7 fixtures they vied for the position with Trézéguet often relegated to a substitute role.
On Saturday, 2 November 2019 with both Trézéguet and El Ghazi in the line up Trézéguet scored his debut goal for Villa against Liverpool at Villa Park in a game where a steadfast Villa held the lead against an all-conquering Champions-elect until two minutes from time.
Despite his goal, Trézéguet flitted in and out of the team, mostly as a substitute with El Ghazi being the preferred option for wing play through to July 2020 - when the hitherto suspended Premier League season has been restarted.
Trézéguet after having spent 9 of the previous 10 fixtures as a substitute suddenly reappeared as Villa’s first choice winger for the final 6 games of the 2019-20 campaign and in doing so scored three crucial goals in the run in to help Villa avoid relegation.
In total in his debut season Trézéguet made 35 Premier League appearances including 15 as substitute, scoring 6 top flight goals including crucial strikes in the relegation run in. Trézéguet also scored the winner that took Villa through to their ninth League Cup final reacting to a stupendous cross from fellow Egyptian international Ahmed Elmohamady in the dying stages of the semi final with Leicester City.
Through the short close season ahead of the start of the 2020-21 campaign there were rumours that a pre-arranged transfer away from the club had been struck by Trézéguet and Villa in the event of their relegation however despite retaining their top flight status Trézéguet remained linked with a move to pastures new.
Dean Smith however retained the services of Trézéguet and he started the 2020-21 campaign as first choice ahead of Anwar El-Ghazi and new arrival Bertrand Traoré.
Trézéguet made his 50th appearance for Villa on Saturday, 21 November 2020 against Brighton & Hove Albion and appeared in every one of Villa’s first nine games before succumbing to successive injuries that kept him out of contention for the remainder of 2020.
Across his 10 appearances in 2020-21 up to his injury Trézéguet had created two assists but failed to score and led to him being labelled “The Premier League’s unluckiest player this season”, for despite his undoubted work ethic, his goalscoring prowess was often in limited supply despite a surplus of opportunities being created by this most attacking of Villa teams.
As Dean Smith opined “He’s disappointed that he hasn’t scored more goals for Aston Villa. But he’s creating chances and I’d only start to worry when he’s not getting opportunities. He works hard for his opportunities and as I’ve said before, his attitude and work rate is second to none and he’s improving all of the time.”
Indeed Trézéguet’s commitment to the team is his outstanding feature and whilst he may not have the skills or finishing ability of some of his team-mates his value when playing is there for all to see as his manager at Kasımpaşa S.K. Mustafa Denizli noted “He can run for anything. If he doesn’t do what he wants first time, he will run everywhere to make it right. He has a problem with himself for not getting the ball in the first place. “
“He’s a different guy — very happy when he wins but very down when he loses. He’s a good talent. If you give him the freedom from 35 metres from goal, he can do everything with the ball, he’s so clever.”
“He likes to do everything if he can. His personality is so nice and his heart is so soft. He’s a real team player.”
In January 2021, following his head injury and subsequent hamstring which kept him out of the final games of 2020, Trézéguet revealed that he was one of Villa’s nine players who had tested positive for COVID-19.
Trézéguet said:
“As God wills … After being hit in the head with 6 stitches, I was exposed to a tear and a hindquarters after some missed for a month, then after rehabilitation and the beginning of the return to group training, I was infected with the Coronavirus. Praise be to God for everything and may God heal every patient.”
Villa’s first-team bubble was hit with 14 positive COVID-19 tests on Monday, January 4 2021. Nine of the positive tests were for players with five members of staff testing positive. Villa closed their Bodymoor Heath training ground on Thursday, January 7 2021 following further tests on Wednesday, January 6 2021. As a result Villa’s first-team bubble were placed into isolation and weren’t able to play their third-round FA Cup tie against Liverpool with Mark Delaney standing in for Dean Smith as he picked a squad full of under-23 and under-18 players. Villa’s subsequent Premier League fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton were suspended.
Trézéguet remained out of the first team picture for most of January 2021 as subsequent injuries hampered his recovery and was thereafter mainly used as a substitute by Dean Smith until a run of three games in the starting line up in March as Villa’s form took a downward turn.
For his part. Trézéguet, like his wing contemporaries Anwar El Ghazi and Bertrand Traoré, he was the subject of criticism for their lack of creativity and impact. Somewhat unfairly given El Ghazi’s scoring streak earlier in the season and Traoré’s often telling contribution in his return to English football.
Trézéguet however did not have the scoring record, or assist creation that those players could point to during 2020-21 and so his arrival as a substitute for El Ghazi - an oft employed Dean Smith move - with Villa behind to relegation zone Fulham, was met with widespread scepticism. Trézéguet however hit a brace - his first goals of the campaign, to complement his typically industrious approach to the game. A confidence player who scores in batches, hopes were raised that a goalscoring run was imminent as Villa hit a tough run of fixtures to the season end in their quest for a top 10 finish.
Trézéguet was rewarded by Dean Smith for his goalscoring cameo against Fulham with a place in the starting line up for Liverpool away. Another decent showing however was curtailed by injury in the 82’ of the game after damaging ligaments. The injury was confirmed as requiring surgery and Trézéguet’s 2020-21 campaign was over.
Dean Smith confirmed the news saying “[He] was naturally upset and worried at what extent the injury is but only time will tell us.”
Having lost both Tom Heaton and Wesley to ACL injuries on New Years Day 2020 with Wesley yet to return to action over 16 months later, a third long-term ligament injury to Dean Smith’s already small squad wasn’t just bad news for Trézéguet.
Following his Anfiield injury, Trézéguet would make just one further appearance for Villa in January 2022 having seen his club career decimated by injury and international absences.
Trézéguet would be loaned out to Istanbul Basaksehir FK 🇹🇷 in February 2022 before joining Trabzonspor 🇹🇷 permanently for €4.00m in July 2022.
