Player #177 for Aston Villa James Cantrell, known as Jimmy Cantrell played as a forward for the club in the inside right position.
Jimmy played for Villa between 1904-05 and 1907-08 making a total of 51 appearances.
Jimmy was born in Sheepbridge on 7th May 1882 and made his Villa debut on 12th November 1904 aged 22.
Villa had signed Jimmy from Hucknall Constitutionals and during his time with Villa he showed glimpses of the prolific goal scorer he was to become after leaving.
Jimmy made his mark on the first team in the 1906-07 season with more than a goal every other game over 23 appearances in the league.
Villa sold Jimmy to Notts County (along with Roly Harper) in February 1909 where he achieved greater consistency with 64 goals in 131, before he moved on to Tottenham Hotspur scoring 74 times in 160 games. Making it even more curious why Jimmy was unable to convince the Villa hierarchy of his worth after his arrival.
Jimmy made his final appearance for Villa on 22nd February 1907 aged 25.
Jimmy had played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Jimmy passed away in Basford on 31st July 1960 aged 78.
