Player #391 for Aston Villa, John Henry Morby, known as Jack Morby, played as a centre half for Villa in the 1945-46 regional league season making 12 appearances including 3 in the FA Cup.
Jack was born in Wednesfield, just 14 miles from Villa Park, on 1 August 1920 and played in his sole season for Villa at the age of 25.
Joining Villa as an amateur for Villa in 1943, Jack had previously had a trial with Wolves aged 16 whilst playing as an amateur for Hednesford Town before the War.
Jack came into Villa’s senior side in the war-time season of 1943-44 against Stoke City with defensive regular Ernie ‘Mush’ Callaghan injured.
Jack went on to hold the centre half position in good hands for many weeks before - in 1945-46 - making his official senior debut by appearing for the Villa first team on 3 occasions in that season’s FA Cup.
Jack was also a “lease-lend” player that same season - lining up for Portsmouth for their visit to play Birmingham (soon to be christened ‘City’) at St Andrew’s.
After his 1945-46 cameo, Jack moved on to non-league Worcester City in July 1948 without having made an appearance in the reinstated football league from 1946-47.
Jack had played in the regional league season under manager Alex Massie.
