Barney was born in Hockley, less than 3 miles from Villa Park, in 1882 and made his debut for the club as a 23 year old on the 4th November 1905 in the 4-1 home win over Middlesbrough in which Barney scored the opening goal.
Villa had signed Barney from Icknield Street Old Boys and he made his final appearance just 9 days after his debut on 13th November 1905 in the 1-0 away win at Stoke City.
Barney moved on to Westbourne Celtic in December 1905.
Barney played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Barney passed away in 1946 aged 64.
