Archibald Vale
Player #29 for Aston Villa, Archibald Foster Vale played as a goalkeeper for the club. Archibald represented Villa three times during the 1883-84 FA Cup campaign.
Archibald was born in Kings Heath, seven miles from Villa’s current ground, in July 1861 and made his debut as a 22 year old on 10th November 1883.
Villa had signed Archibald from Edwardians FC.
Archibald was the fifth custodian of the Villa goal in FA Cup football and the first Villa keeper to keep a clean sheet which came in the 5-0 2nd Round win against Stafford Road at the Recreation Ground.
In total Archibald conceded 7 goals in his 3 appearances despite keeping one clean sheet, at a ratio of 2.33 goals per game.
Archibald’s final game for Villa came on the 19th January 1884 in the 6-1 FA Cup 4th Round defeat to Queens Park at Hampden Park. Archibald moved on to Erdington Lads’ Club shortly thereafter.
Archibald played in the era when team selection was made by a Management Committee rather than the latter day more typical Manager role.
Archibald passed away in Walsall in August 1937 aged 76.
