Villa face Atlético Madrid for the first time in competitive football, Atlético become the 139th team that the Villa first team has played in League or Cup football, Villa’s 25th continental European opponents and their fourth from Spain following meetings with Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Deportivo La Coruña in previous campaigns.
Villa concede at the Estadio Metropolitano as John Gregory leads the team in a Quarter Final of the UEFA Cup in only his second game in charge.
The concession is Mark Bosnich’s concedes his 200th in a Villa shirt on his 201st appearance (200 Starts) to make it W87 D50 L64, 200 Goals Conceded at a rate of 1.00 goals per game and 77 Clean Sheets (38%) so far in his Villa career.
Meanwhile, Bosnich faces a bombardment of batteries in disgraceful scenes from the home supporters in Madrid.
Off the pitch, Stan Collymore opens up on claims of racist abuse from Liverpool players last time out at Anfield.
What they Said
"I got hit by a couple of batteries in the warm-up which wasn't a problem, but during the game I wanted to make the referee aware that I was getting pelted with cigarette lighters.
”But when the referee showed me a yellow card I thought it was a bit harsh. To book me encouraged the crowd to throw more things."
Mark Bosnich.
