Graham Turner’s Villa had now lost four of their last five and having already sold Paul Rideout, a fellow shining light of the 1984-85 season, midfielder Steve McMahon made his final appearance for Villa aged 24 before moving on to Liverpool in September 1985 for a fee of £350,000. McMahon played for Villa between 1983-84 and 1985-86 making 91 appearances and scoring 7 goals.
