Match Report
Everton scored a late winning goal to beat Aston Villa at Goodison Park in the Womenโs Super League on Sunday afternoon. Ebony Salmon put Villa ahead with a sharp finish after 13 minutes, but they missed chances to extend their lead. Martina Fernรกndez equalised for Everton in the 32nd minute and scored again in the final minute to secure the victory. The loss drops Natalia Arroyoโs team to eighth place in the league, and they will face Liverpool next weekend at home. Villa aimed to bounce back from a heavy defeat to Manchester United, making four changes to their lineup, including a first start for January signing Oriane Jean-Franรงois. Everton, eager for a win after five losses in six games, tested Sabrina DโAngelo early when Nicole Momikiโs dribble prompted a save. Soon after, Salmon capitalised on a loose pass outside the box to score. Everton equalised when Fernรกndez headed in Maceโs corner, and Villa nearly regained the lead immediately, with a missed shot following a counterattack. The crossbar saved Villa later in the first half on Ornella Vignolaโs shot. After halftime, Everton dominated initially, but Villa regained control, pressing them into their own half but struggling to create clear chances. DโAngelo also made a key save from a long free-kick. In the final 15 minutes, both teams made substitutions, with Villa bringing on Jenna Nighswonger and Chasity Grant, and Everton introducing Maz Pacheco. What seemed like a draw changed in the 89th minute when Fernรกndez scored again with a header at the back post, sealing Evertonโs win.
