Albion pack the team with experience and veterans, but Villa’s u21s only just come up short, 0-0 at full time, 1-1 at the end of extra time and losing on penalties after extra time.
In a similar story for Villa, it was the opposition ‘keeper who did for another cup run, and almost single-handedly prevented Villa from reaching another semi-final, but it was Darren Byfield’s penalty miss eight minutes into extra time that really cost Villa. Villa’s scheduled penalty-taker, Les Hines, had already been subbed off, and Byfield blazed his effort well over the bar, having himself won the penalty.
Villa, however, did take the lead after 115 minutes as Alan Lee finished off a fine move, but Albion scored a 120th-minute equaliser their performance barely merited.
Villa’s nemesis, the Albion keeper, took advantage of their fortune to save two of Villa’s spot-kicks, and their cup run was over.
