Villa record their first win of the season in all competitions and it's a big one.
Aston Villa celebrated their first victory of the NextGen tournament, convincingly dispatching Fenerbahce 4-0 on a balmy night in North Birmingham.
Villa were captained by Gary Gardner, fresh from his inclusion in the first-team squad against Queens Park Rangers, and it did not take long for the captain to make his mark against the visitors.
It was Gardnerโs ball over a static Fenerbahce back four which led to the opening goal, Samir Carruthers nipping in to poke it past an exposed Erten Ersu in the Fenerbache net to give Villa an 11th-minute lead.
The Villa captain could have walked off the pitch at half-time with the match ball, twice forcing Ersu into action from set-pieces before firing wide from the edge of the area, but deservedly got his goal in the 25th minute, converting after Carruthers had been brought down by Alicivan Duzova in the Fenerbahce area.
Fenerbahce struggled at times, but had a chance to pull a goal back twice in the space of a minute, Kerem Cagatay firing over Villa keeper Bejni Siegrist's crossbar, Beykan Simsek then shooting wide moments later.
The hosts deservedly extended their lead early in the second half, Calum Robinson glancing home a Carruthers cross following a short corner on the Villa left.
What was threatening to turn into a rout was only averted by the athleticism of Ersu in the Fenerbahce goal, expertly palming over a Graham Burke effort from point-blank range in the 63rd minute.
But relief for the visitors proved only to be temporary, Daniel Johnson finishing expertly in the 67th minute to seal the game for the home side.
Fenerbahce came close to grabbing a consolation in the 78th minute, Recep Niyaz going agonisingly close following some excellent link-up play on the edge of the Villa area with Benji Siegrist beaten, but a determined Villa managed to maintain their clean sheet and ran out comfortable winners.
The result leaves Villa in 2nd place in NextGen Group 3, six points behind leaders Ajax, who've played a game more. Fenerbahce find themselves bottom of the group on goal difference, having conceded nine goals in their opening two games.
