Willie Clarke
Player #154 for Aston Villa, William Gibb Clarke, known as Willie Clarke played as a winger for the club.
Willie played for Villa between 1901-02 and 1904-05 making 43 appearances.
Willie was born in Mauchline, Scotland on 3rd March 1878 and made his first appearance for the club as a 23 year old on 7th September 1901.
Villa had signed Willie from Bristol Rovers and scored 3 league goals in each of the 1901-02 and 1902-03 league campaigns appearing 15 and 20 times respectively.
In doing so his goal in the Christmas Day 1901 3-2 win over Everton represented the first time a person of colour scored in the English First Division.
From the 1903-04 seasons Willie’s appearances began to tail off and he left Villa for Bradford City in return for a fee of £200.
Willie played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Willie passed away in Marylebone, London on Tuesday, 23 April 1940 aged 62.
