Tommy Niblo
Player #162 for Aston Villa, Thomas Bruce D Niblo, known as Tommy Niblo played as a forward for the club.
Tommy played for Villa between 1901-02 and 1903-04 making 53 appearances.
Tommy was born in Dunfermline, Scotland on 24th September 1877 and made his first appearance for Villa as a 24 year old on 18th January 1902.
Villa had signed Tommy from Newcastle United and he went on to play 4 games in his first season in Villa’s push to the FA Cup Semi Final in 1902-03.
Tommy became a regular league starter in 1901-02 with his most prolific season coming in 1903-04 as Villa went on to finish 5th.
The Villa News and Record of 1st September 1906 paid contemporary tribute to Tommy:
“A capital forward, full of ‘go’ from start to finish. In the heat of a game is inclined to be selfish, and often lacks judgement at critical moments. A trier of the first water, and with more care in avoiding the backs or in passing would have doubled his value. Strong, compactly built, and heedless of danger, he can get through any amount of work, and usually does best with plenty to do. Good in any forward position, but probably best in the centre.”
Tommy made his final appearance for Villa aged 26 on Saturday, 27 February 1904 before moving on to Nottingham Forest.
Tommy had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Tommy passed away in Newcastle in December 1929 aged just 52.
