Rowland Codling

Player #190 for Aston Villa, Rowland Codling played as a midfielder for the club in a position then known as left half.

Rowland played for Villa between 1905-06 and 1908-09 making 82 appearances over his 4 seasons.

Rowland was born in Norton-on-Tees on 22nd February 1880 and made his debut appearance as a 26 year old on the 17th March 1906.

Villa had signed Rowland from Clapton Orient alongside Bert Kingaby earlier in the month.

Rowland had represented several much smaller clubs before Villa brought him in but unlike Kingaby he proved an effective - and uncontroversial first team player.

For two seasons Codling was almost ever-present in the first team making 34 and 35 league appearances in his 2 full seasons with Villa.

Rowland however would make his final appearance on 12th December 1908 aged 28 and moved on to Northampton Town in the July 1909.

Rowland played under the George Ramsey led Management Committee.

Rowland passed away in Barton in 1956 aged 76.
