Mart Watkins
Player #172 for Aston Villa, Walter Martin Watkins, known as Mart Watkins played as a forward for the club in the inside forward position.
Mart played for Villa in the 1903-04 and 1904-05 seasons making 6 appearances.
Mart was born in Caersws, Wales in August 1880 and went on to represent Wales 10 times, scoring 4 goals.
Mart made his Villa debut on 23rd January 1904 aged 23.
Villa had signed Mart from Stoke for £400 however despite the significant fee he was a fleeing starter for Villa and made no appearances in the victorious 1904-05 FA Cup campaign.
All Mart’s appearances came in the league with 5 of his total 6 coming in his first season with the club, 1903-04.
Mart Watkins’ tall, slim build and neat moustache were very much in period.
Watkins was described as a ‘smart player’, possessing a whiplash shot who would pass to his winger before dashing back into the penalty area to launch himself at the ensuing cross. A proponent of the classic 1-2 move that would sadly rarely appear for the Villa.
Mart’s final game for Villa came on 12th September 1904 at the age of 24 after which he was sold to Sunderland.
Mart had played under the George Ramsey led Management Committee.
Mart passed away in Stoke-on-Trent on 17th May 1942 aged 61.
