Player #242 for Aston Villa, James Maxwell Leach, known as Jimmy Leach played as a midfielder for the club in the wing half position.
Jimmy played for Villa between 1912-13 and 1921-22 making 76 appearances over his 6 seasons with the club.
Jimmy was born in Spennymoor, County Durham on the 10th July 1890 and he made his Villa debut on the 14th December 1912 aged 22.
Villa had signed Jimmy from Spen Black & White FC and he was to impact the first team immediately, becoming a regular over the 3 seasons before WW1.
In Jimmy’s first season he made 4 appearances in the run to the FA Cup win over Sunderland including playing in the Final in front of a crowd of 121,919 at Crystal Palace, London in April 1913.
Jimmy also helped Villa to another Semi Final the following season in a campaign in which he was an ever present and helped the club finish 2nd in the league in both of his first 2 seasons.
Like many players of the era however his career was interrupted by the Great War and on his return Jimmy added only a further 2 appearances over the 3 post war seasons.
Jimmy’s final game came aged 31 on Saturday, 22 October 1921 after which he moved to Queens Park Rangers in July 1922.
Jimmy had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Jimmy passed away in 1951 aged 61.
