Jimmy Birch
Player #226 for Aston Villa, James Birch, known as Jimmy Birch played as a centre forward for the club.
Jimmy played for Villa in the 1911-12 season making 3 appearances.
Jimmy was born in Blackwell, Derbyshire in 1888 and made his debut appearance for Villa at the age of 23 on the 21st October 1911, scoring a brace - his only goals for Villa - in the 2-3 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Jimmy’s only other game for Villa would come in the reverse fixture on 24th February 1912 with Villa once again beaten - this time 0-3.
Villa had signed Jimmy from Stourbridge FC in May 1910.
Despite being a stocky and bustling centre forward Jimmy was just 5 feet 7 inches tall, a relatively small size for a footballer.
Jimmy’s height maybe counted against his selection for the first team given his scoring prowess and value had been well proven through his reserve team performances
However former Villa great Jimmy Cowan saw through the physique and took Jimmy to Queens Park Rangers in June 1912 where he went on to make over 350 appearances and score 144 goals.
Jimmy played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Jimmy passed away in London in 1940 aged just 52.
