Harry Hampton

Player #176 for Aston Villa, Joseph Harry Hampton, known as Harry Hampton and nicknamed Appy ‘Arry and also The Wellington Whirlwind played as a centre forward for the club.

Harry played for Villa between 1904-05 and 1919-20.

Harry was born in Wellington, Shropshire on 21st April 1885 and made his Villa debut on 9th November 1904 aged 19.

During his time with Villa Harry won the 1904-05 and 1912-13 FA Cup as well as the 1909-10 League title.

Villa had signed Harry from Wellington Town FC and during his debut season with Villa won the FA Cup in 1904-05 having been an ever present including the final hosted at Crystal Palace, London which saw Villa vanquish Newcastle United 2-0 in front of a crowd of 101,117.

Harry scored Villa’s 2 goals in the final, hitting the net in the 2nd and 76th minute.

In his 12 seasons Harry’s goals helped Villa to 7 top five finishes including 4 second places as well as the 1909-10 league title.

Harry’s second FA Cup win came in the 1912-13 season with him making 6 appearances, scoring 5 goals in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rounds including a hat-trick in the 5-0 win over Bradford Park Avenue.

Harry made his final appearance for Villa aged 34 on 3rd July 1920

Harry had played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Harry passed away in Rhyl on 15th March 1963 aged 77.
