Ernie was born in Crawshaw Booth, Manchester on 23rd April 1892 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on the 13th September 1919 aged 27.

Villa had signed Ernie from youth football and during his time with Villa won the 1919-20 FA Cup, appearing in the 1st Round match versus Queens Park Rangers.

Ernie played his last game for Villa on the 17th April 1922 at the age of 30 before moving on to Bradford City.

Ernie played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Ernie passed away in Handsworth on 9th December 1969 aged 70.
