Billy Brawn

Player #161 for Aston Villa, William Frederick Brawn, known as Billy Brawn played as a winger for the club in the outside right position.

Billy played for Villa between 1901-02 and 1905-06 making 107 appearances.

Billy was born in Wellingborough on 1st August 1878 and made his first appearance for Villa as a 23 year old on 11th January 1902.

Villa had signed Billy from Sheffield United and he was an ever present in the 1904-05 FA Cup winning campaign including the final hosted at Crystal Palace, London which saw Villa vanquish Newcastle United 2-0 in front of a crowd of 101,117.

Billy became a regular league starter in 1903-04 making 32 and 30 appearances in consecutive seasons.

The Villa News and Record of 1st September 1906 paid contemporary tribute to Billy:

“For a period quite the best outside right in the country. Possessing a fine turn of speed, is always a dangerous man when once clear. Centres with force and precision from the line and can shoot with deadly effect when within range. Has scored many fine goals with oblique shots. Brilliant on his day, but somewhat unequal. Forceful, energetic; has more vim than resource.”

Billy moved on to Middlesbrough after playing his final game for Villa on 20th January 1906.

Billy had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Billy passed away in London on 18th August 1932 aged 54.
